Get Your Kittens ‘Fixed’ for Free - Take a Life Saving SPAYcation This July

Jun 29, 2011

July 2011: Summer vacations are a family tradition. This July you can take your cats and kittens on a vaCATion! To prevent unwanted litters of kittens from being born, the Animal Shelter Alliance of Portland (ASAP) is offering free spay/neuter surgeries for kittens this July in five locations around the Portland/Vancouver metro area. Caretakers of stray or feral cats can take advantage of this offer as well.

Qualified cat owners can have their fertile kittens six months and under spayed or neutered for free July 18 through July 22. Kittens need to be at least eight-weeks old and weigh 2.25 pounds. Mom and Dad cats are also included in this summertime adventure and can be spayed/neutered for only $10. Surgeries are performed by licensed veterinarians and subsidized through charitable donations. Over 500 free kitten spay/neuter surgery spots will be available the week of July 18 – 22.

“As the days gets longer the cats start to reproduce at a much higher rate, two cats can become a 100 cats in a matter of months”, said Dr. Kris Otteman, OHS Director of Shelter Medicine and ASAP Spay & Save volunteer. “With 22,000 cats entering our area shelters annually, we need to focus on finding good homes for them, without a flood of kittens adding to the overpopulation. There are not enough homes for all of them.”

How to Qualify: For a cat owner to qualify, they must receive government assistance (such as Medicaid, WIC, food stamps, SSI, Section 8 public housing, AFDC or TANF), and live in Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas, or Clark County. Individuals feeding unowned feral/stray cats need not meet income requirements.
