Spay & Save helps Portland area families access affordable spay & neuter surgeries for their cats.

About Spay & Save

Spay & Save is a Portland metro area-wide program that aims to assist low income families and their cats by offering affordable spay & neuter surgeries for those who qualify. The program is organized and managed by the Animal Shelter Alliance of Portland, (ASAP). The Spay & Save program aims to keep struggling families and their pets together and reduce the number of cats and kittens that are coming into our shelters every year— since 2010, cat intake from the public to our shelters has decreased by 62.1%.

All surgeries are performed by licensed veterinarians and assisted by skilled, caring support teams. The low cost service is made possible by charitable donations. See our MAP of spay neuter centers below to find a clinic closest to you.

Be part of the solution and get your cat fixed!

By spaying and neutering the cats in our community, we can prevent unwanted litters and save thousands of lives. We can also reduce the numbers of cats and kittens coming into our shelters each year.

Did you know that kittens can have kittens?

Cats can start mating as early as six months of age; an unaltered male can father hundreds of kittens a year, and an unaltered female can produce up to three litters a year.

Altering your cat will greatly reduce the risk of unwanted behaviors, such as yowling, spraying or whining and will make your cat a much happier companion. It keeps outdoor cats closer to home, reducing roaming and cat fights that result from seeking a mate.

Spaying and neutering also reduces the risk for numerous health problems, including certain types of cancers.

Spay & Save FAQ

Spaying or neutering your pet provides many benefits for you, your pet, and the community overall. For males, neutering can reduce spraying or marking behavior, as well as the urge to run away to seek out females in heat. For females, spaying will greatly decrease their chances of developing mammary tumors, and prevents the life-threatening disease of the uterus called pyometra. Most importantly, spaying and neutering is the most effective method we can use to prevent the birth of unplanned litters, reduce the numbers of unwanted animals entering our area shelters, and work toward an end to pet homelessness.
